e-mail Rosie | Could anyone tell me what months moule are in season, hoping they are in Late December. | simonarn replied on 02/11/2009 at 10:51 e-mail simonarn | | they say you can eat mussels, and oysters etc in any month with an R in it. and no jb saturday doesnt count! |
| LaughingCow replied on 02/11/2009 at 15:50 e-mail LaughingCow | Yes, the "R" in the month is because (here in the northern hemisphere anyway) those are the colder months, so shellfish are less likely to go "off" quickly. I wonder what rule of thumb they use in Australia? Maybe you can only eat them when there is NOT an "R" in the month down there! :-)
Also you don't want to be eating prawns, mussels etc. in their breeding season (which is often in the summer) as apart from the obvious one of allowing their numbers to grow for future harvests their flesh is not as nice to eat during that time.
We have a friend who lives in Sète on the south coast. That area is famous for their oysters but recently they have had their oyster beds temporarily shut down by the health autorities because of toxic algae. The toxins can get into the oyster so that people eating them get ill. I think the shellfish farmers and fishermen in some areas of Brittanny have also had a similar problem this year.
But if they are on sale in the shops you don't need to worry, I don't think, as the quality control for this kind of thing is very high in France.

This is why you will see shops and restaurants selling them all year, e.g. Bofinger in Paris. Well, those are the facts and you can follow them, as you wish. I would buy from a reliable supplier at any time of the year. I would never buy from a street vendor, at any time of the year.
You pays your money and you makes your choice, but do remember that food poisoning is seriously painful.
Bon Apetit! |
